The Thunderclap
Enormous for ten minutes, then genuinely over.
You deal with it while it is happening, because waiting feels worse
Whatever you are feeling is fully visible to everyone in the room
It is not finished until the two of you are okay again
Who you are
You go up fast and loud, and then you are done — reaching out, apologizing, wanting to be okay again, sometimes within the same hour. For you the noise was never the point. It was just how the feeling exited your body.
This is easier to be close to than it looks from outside. There is no punishment phase, no cold stretch, no waiting to see how long you will be angry. The whole event has a beginning and an end on the same day.
The problem is that other people's clocks run slower. You are ready for the hug at minute eleven and they are still at minute two, and being asked to be fine before they have processed anything can feel like the disagreement is being erased rather than resolved.
After the storm passes, ask whether they are ready, instead of assuming the reset is mutual. Sometimes the answer is later, and later is fine.
You know it's you when…
- You were furious and then completely fine inside one hour
- Someone needed more time than you thought was reasonable
- You apologized first and meant every word of it
