The Standing Offer
The offer never expires and everybody knows it.
People get the same version of you on a good week and a bad one
You let the heat drop first, then return when it can land
Your care shows up as rides, meals, logistics, things done
Who you are
You don't push. You don't chase resolution. You simply remain available, and when someone finally takes you up on it, you show up with your hands ready. Months can pass between contact and nothing about you has cooled.
This is a quietly enormous green flag. Most support has an expiration date — people offer once, feel unneeded, and drift. You are the person somebody can call after a year of silence and be met exactly where they left off, with no interest charged on the gap.
The risk is invisibility. An offer that never presses is easy to forget, and people in real trouble often can't initiate anything. You can end up faithfully available to someone who needed you to knock.
For the two or three people who matter most, don't wait to be called. Show up unannounced with something in your hands once in a while.
You know it's you when…
- Someone called after a year and you picked up like it was nothing
- You were available the whole time and nobody thought to ask
- Your help arrives in the form of a car and an afternoon
