The Waiting Room
You're planning a future they haven't agreed to.
Nobody has defined it and both of you notice that daily
One of you is carrying most of the contact and it's you
Things get scheduled past this week without it being weird
Who you are
Nothing is defined, you're doing most of the reaching, and you're the one thinking about what comes next. You've built a fairly detailed future in your head and they've been given no notice that it exists.
The hardest part of this result is that it's not delusional. They do give you something — enough warmth, enough consistency, that the hope is reasonable. This isn't a situation where you're imagining things. It's one where you're financing something alone.
What keeps people here is the belief that patience will be rewarded. Sometimes it is. More often the arrangement stays exactly as it is, because it's already working perfectly well for one of you.
Ask directly what they want, and let a vague answer be an answer. That's the whole exercise.
You know it's you when…
- You have a detailed future planned that they know nothing about
- You're the one reaching out and the one thinking ahead
- You've told yourself to be patient more than a few times
