You watch your money closely and you spend it on the present — but not on everything. You've got a small number of categories where you'll pay whatever it costs, and you fund them by being genuinely unbothered about everything else.
That's a sophisticated way to handle money and most people never get there. It requires knowing what you actually like, which is harder than it sounds, and being willing to look cheap about the things you don't care about.
The risk is a slow category creep. The list of things that "count" grows by one a year until nothing is left to fund it, and then you're just someone who spends a lot with a story about it.
Every so often, write the list down. If it's longer than it was last year, that's the thing to look at.
