Who you are

You don't end things. You reduce them. Replies get shorter, plans get vaguer, and at some point there's nothing left to end. There was no fight and no conversation, which lets you tell yourself nothing really happened. The other person is usually still holding the last normal text, trying to work out which day it changed.

It isn't cruelty and it usually isn't even a decision. Confrontation costs you more than the entire relationship is worth in that moment, so you take the exit that requires no words. Fading is the version of leaving that never has to be defended, and that's exactly why it's the one you reach for.

The same instinct runs while things are good. You keep a little in reserve, never quite hand over the whole thing, and stay slightly less invested than the person across from you. It feels like being careful. From the outside it reads as being optional.

You don't have to become confrontational. You do have to become legible. One sentence — "I'm pulling back and here's why" — is the difference between a person who needed space and a person who disappeared. Same behavior, completely different thing to be on the receiving end of.
