The Slow Boil
You leave the room and come back with a case and a temper.
You need distance before you can say anything you would stand behind
Whatever you are feeling is fully visible to everyone in the room
It is not finished until the true version of events is agreed on
Who you are
In the moment you go quiet, or you leave. Then you spend an hour, or a week, assembling what you should have said — and when you come back you come back hot, organized, and not looking for a middle.
The delay is not avoidance. You know that whatever you would have produced on the spot would have been worse, and you are usually right about that. What returns is sharper and more accurate than the live version would have been.
The difficulty is that the other person experienced the gap as the thing being over. They moved on. Reopening it days later at higher intensity than it originally had is disorienting, and it teaches people that with you nothing is ever actually finished.
When you leave, say when you are coming back. "I need an hour" turns a disappearance into an appointment.
You know it's you when…
- You raised something a week later and they had forgotten it
- The version you rehearsed was much better than the live one
- You went quiet and they thought that meant it was fine
