The Consensus Builder
Everyone agreed. It took until Thursday.
Nothing leaves your hands until you would defend every line of it
Fifteen minutes on a call beats four days of a thread every time
You want eyes on it early, because surprises at the end are worse
Who you are
You want it right and you want everyone on board, so you talk to people — before, during, and before it goes out. By the time your work lands, nobody is surprised and nobody is quietly opposed, which means it actually gets adopted instead of politely ignored.
This is the skill that separates work that happens from work that was technically approved. Plenty of good decisions die because someone wasn't consulted, and you are the person who noticed that in advance.
But agreement has a price, and it is time. Some decisions do not deserve four conversations, and when the whole process runs at consensus speed the small reversible things move as slowly as the large irreversible ones. Occasionally the version everyone agreed to is also the version nobody is excited about.
Sort decisions into reversible and not. The reversible ones you're allowed to just make.
You know it's you when…
- Something got adopted because nobody felt bypassed
- A two-day decision took two weeks and four conversations
- The agreed version was one nobody was excited about
