The Open Door
Everyone's friend, and you've never sent the first text.
You are warm and available, and almost never the one who opens the thread
Little contact most days, so there is never much to catch up on
A wide circle, each one real, none of them requiring daily upkeep
Who you are
You are in touch with a lot of people, often, and almost none of it started with you. You are easy to invite, easy to be around, and you say yes — so the invitations keep coming and the circle stays wide.
This is a genuinely pleasant way to exist and it is not passive. Being reliably warm, reliably available, and never the one who makes things complicated is a real contribution. People keep inviting you because you improve the room.
But there is an asymmetry that gets visible in your thirties. The friendships you have are the ones other people decided to maintain, which means your social life is shaped entirely by who happens to be reaching. Nobody reads that as deliberate — but a few people have wondered whether you would notice if they stopped.
Pick two people and start something this month. Not a reply. A first message with a day in it.
You know it's you when…
- Nearly every plan you have was somebody else's idea
- You said yes to something you had no interest in, happily
- Someone wondered whether you'd notice if they went quiet
