The Quiet Few
Three people, twice a year, and that's plenty.
You are warm and available, and almost never the one who opens the thread
Months of nothing, then four hours that cover the entire year
A short list you invest almost everything in, and no plans to extend it
Who you are
A very short list, long gaps, and you are not the one closing them. When you do see these people it goes deep and it matters, and in between you are genuinely fine. You are not lonely and you are not avoiding anyone.
This is the least understood friendship shape, because from outside it looks like withdrawal and from inside it is nothing of the kind. You have a small number of people you are unconditionally serious about, and you have no appetite for the volume that other people seem to require.
The honest risk is not loneliness now — it is the shape of it later. Friendship that is both rare and few has almost no surface area, so an ordinary life event that removes one person removes a large share of your connection to other people at once, and rebuilding from that position takes real effort you will not feel like making.
Add one repeating thing to the calendar. Same person, same month, every year. Low cost, keeps the line warm.
You know it's you when…
- People assume you're lonely and you are genuinely not
- Twice a year with one person covers everything that matters
- You have no appetite for the amount of socializing others do
