The Steady Build
No speeches. Just a year of never letting them down.
You need receipts before you hand anything over
You'd rather show up than announce anything
You want the lives actually mixed together
Who you are
You don't announce anything and you don't move fast, but you show up, and you keep showing up, and at some point the other person realizes you've quietly become load-bearing. Your version of a declaration is a year of not flaking, and honestly, it's more convincing than most declarations.
You do want closeness — real, mixed-together closeness. You just insist on earning it first, and on them earning it too. Once you're in, you're deeply in, and it's very hard to shake you loose.
The gap is the early months. Someone who needs words is standing there with nothing to hold, watching you be reliable and wondering if reliable is all it is. You're building something they can't see the plans for.
Narrate a little. Not a lot. "I'm in this" said once, out loud, in month three, would save the right person from leaving before the good part.
You know it's you when…
- You've never once flaked on anyone you actually cared about
- Your commitment shows up in the calendar before the conversation
- People realize how much you did only in hindsight
