Nineteen
Every option is still open and you are not closing any.
An unfamiliar option is the interesting one, every time
It gets handled, but only once it is genuinely due
Your best hours start after most people have gone to bed
Who you are
You want the new thing, you deal with the boring thing when it is actually due, and your best hours are the ones after midnight. Whatever your birth certificate says, that is a nineteen-year-old's operating system, and it is running well.
The upside is genuinely large. You say yes to things other people talk themselves out of, you are never the reason a night ends, and your life keeps producing stories because you keep leaving room for them to happen. People in their thirties describe you as the most alive person they know, usually with a note of envy in it.
The cost shows up in the paperwork of being a person. Renewals lapse, appointments get rescheduled twice, and a certain amount of your energy goes into cleaning up things that would have taken ten minutes to prevent.
Pick the two dullest recurring items in your life and automate them. Not everything — two. That's the whole tax, and it buys back the part you actually like.
You know it's you when…
- You have rescheduled the same appointment more than twice
- Somebody in their thirties told you they envy your life
- Your best thinking happens after everyone else is asleep
