The Clean Desk
The apartment has never looked better than this week.
Nobody told you what step one is, so there is nothing to pick up
The delay produces a suspiciously well-organized life around the task
You need the conditions to be correct before the first line happens
Who you are
When something has no obvious starting point, you reach for things that do. The dishes have a clear first step. The laundry has a clear first step. By the end of an avoidance stretch your space is immaculate, and the task is exactly where it was.
There is something genuinely useful in this. Tidy surroundings do help you think, small completed things do rebuild momentum, and you are never the person whose life falls apart during a hard week. The opposite, in fact.
But it is the most self-forgiving form of delay, because the evidence looks like virtue. Nobody, including you, can look at a spotless kitchen and call it avoidance. The undefined task stays undefined, and it gets no easier for having been postponed in a clean room.
Give the vague thing one defining sentence before you clean anything. One sentence, then go do the dishes.
You know it's you when…
- Your place is cleanest during your least productive weeks
- You reorganized something that did not need reorganizing
- Small easy tasks got done because they had a clear start
