The Someday Pile
It'll get done when things calm down. Things don't.
Nobody told you what step one is, so there is nothing to pick up
No second task gets done either. The hours simply leave
You need the conditions to be correct before the first line happens
Who you are
The task is vague, nothing external is forcing it, and the conditions have not been right for a while. So it moves to the pile — the mental list of things you will get to when life is less busy, which has been growing for a couple of years now.
Most of what is on that pile is genuinely optional, and letting optional things wait is a real skill. Plenty of people burn themselves out doing every item immediately. You are not one of them, and that is worth something.
The difficulty is that the pile does not sort itself. Things that mattered end up next to things that never did, and because nothing on it has a deadline, the ones that quietly mattered most are the ones most likely to sit there indefinitely. Some of them expire on their own.
Pick one item off the pile and give it a date this month. Just one. The rest can keep waiting honestly.
You know it's you when…
- Something on your list has been there over a year
- A task expired on its own before you got to it
- You have been waiting for a calmer month for a while now
