The Side Quest
Enormously busy, in a direction nobody asked for.
Nobody told you what step one is, so there is nothing to pick up
The delay produces a suspiciously well-organized life around the task
Nothing moves until the consequence is close enough to touch
Who you are
The main task has no clear first step, so you find one that does — and then you do it properly. Three hours of research nobody requested, a related problem solved beautifully, an adjacent thing fixed. All real work. None of it the work.
You are not lazy and everyone around you knows it. The output during your avoidance periods is often genuinely valuable, and some of the best things you have made started as elaborate ways of not doing something else.
The problem is that busy feels like an alibi. It is very hard to notice you are avoiding something when you end each day tired and with things completed. The main task stays undefined the whole time, and it gets handled at the last minute under pressure, badly.
Spend five minutes writing down what step one actually is. Not doing it — just naming it. That is usually the entire blocker.
You know it's you when…
- You finished four other things and not the one that mattered
- A side project came out of avoiding the main project
- You were exhausted at the end of a day you spent avoiding
