The Slow Panic
Not working, not resting, aware of it the entire time.
Nobody told you what step one is, so there is nothing to pick up
No second task gets done either. The hours simply leave
Nothing moves until the consequence is close enough to touch
Who you are
You do not know where the task begins, so you do not begin — and you do not do anything else either. The day goes to a loop of the same few apps, with the task sitting in your peripheral vision the whole time, getting louder.
Nothing about this is restful. A day off is restorative; this is the opposite, because the awareness never switches off. You get none of the output and none of the recovery, and you arrive at evening more tired than a working day would have made you.
Eventually the deadline gets close enough to override the fog, and then you move fast. It usually turns out fine, which is the cruelest part — it teaches you that the entire preceding stretch was, in some sense, optional.
When the loop starts, write the task as a question instead of a noun. "What does this need to say?" has an entry point. "The report" does not.
You know it's you when…
- A whole day of neither working nor actually resting
- You were more tired than if you had just done it
- The loop broke only when the deadline got close
