Fix It From Inside
You're fried, but this place still has something in it.
The job is taking more than the job is worth
There's a version of this that still goes somewhere
Savings, skills, and a story you could tell an interviewer
Who you are
You're depleted and there's still a real path here — someone above you has a job you'd want, you're learning things that count, and you're capable enough to move if you needed to. That last part is important: you have leverage, and people who are burned out usually forget they have any.
Burnout in a place with a future is usually a workload, manager, or boundary problem rather than a career problem. Those are fixable, and they're fixable faster than a job search, especially by someone who could credibly leave.
So use the leverage before you spend it. Ask for the scope change, the team change, the four weeks, the different manager. The worst realistic outcome is that they say no and you leave — which is exactly where you'd be anyway.
Give it a fixed window. Ninety days. If nothing structural changes in ninety days, you have your answer and you'll have lost nothing by asking.
You know it's you when…
- You're exhausted and you can still see a version worth having
- You know you could get another job if you had to
- You've never actually asked for the thing that would fix this
