The Loop
Same week, on repeat, for longer than you'd admit.
Nobody has defined it and both of you notice that daily
Reaching out and planning is split roughly down the middle
Nothing exists on the calendar and nobody brings it up
Who you are
Undefined, mutual, and with no forward motion at all. You see each other, it's good, nothing progresses, and then you do it again. Neither of you is doing anything wrong and neither of you is doing anything at all.
Loops are stable because they're genuinely pleasant. There's no shortage of affection here — there's a shortage of direction, and the two feel similar enough from the inside that months disappear before anyone notices.
The thing worth knowing is that loops don't resolve themselves. They end when someone external shows up, or when one person gets tired, and both of those are worse than a conversation you could have had in March.
Name the loop out loud to them. Not what you want it to become — just the observation that it's been the same for a while.
You know it's you when…
- You could not say when this arrangement actually started
- Nothing has changed about it in a genuinely long time
- It's good every time and it goes nowhere every time
