The Someday Saver
Good intentions, no system, and a vague plan for later.
Money is for using and you've made peace with that

Money is a runway you're extending
Who you are
You genuinely intend to save. You think about the future, you feel responsible about it, and the actual mechanism has never quite been set up. Whatever is left at the end of the month is what gets saved, and some months there isn't any left.
This is the most common money personality there is, and it's not a character flaw. Leftover-based saving fails for almost everybody, because spending expands to fill whatever it's allowed to, every time, regardless of how disciplined you feel.
The good news is that this is the easiest one on this list to fix, and the fix takes about ten minutes. Move the saving to the front — an automatic transfer the day you get paid, before your brain has an opinion about it.
Start smaller than feels meaningful. The amount barely matters; the ordering is the entire trick.
You know it's you when…
- You save whatever's left, and some months that's nothing
- You've been meaning to set this up for over a year
- You feel responsible about money without any system behind it
