The Fade
You don't leave. You just get quieter until you're gone.
When things wobble you loosen your grip and drift
You go still and handle it internally, or not at all
You take the blame early, sometimes before it's offered
Who you are
You don't confront, you don't hold on, and you assume the fault is yours — so when something gets uncomfortable you simply become less available. Slower replies, fewer plans, nothing anyone could point to. Eventually there's nothing left to end.
It's the least dramatic exit there is, and that's the appeal. Nobody gets hurt in a scene, nobody has to have the conversation, and you never had to say a hard sentence out loud.
But fading denies the other person the chance to fix anything, which is its own kind of unkind. They're left assembling a reason out of nothing, and often they land on a worse one than the truth. Meanwhile you get to feel like you never did anything.
Pick one thing you've been fading from and send one clear sentence. Staying or going — either is fine. Clear is the point.
You know it's you when…
- Someone has drifted out of your life without one direct conversation
- Your replies get slower before you've consciously decided anything
- You've let something end rather than say one hard sentence
