You take the blame early, sometimes before it's offered

Who you are

When something starts feeling uncertain, you get loud and then you get gone. You'll name every flaw in the thing, decide it was never going to work, and leave — usually a little before you had to, and usually while blaming yourself for all of it.

The logic underneath is protective and pretty understandable. Being the one who leaves hurts less than being left, and if you close the door first the ending is at least yours.

The trouble is you're often leaving things that weren't ending. Perfectly survivable rough patches get treated as verdicts, and you never find out what the thing would have looked like on the other side of a bad month.

Next time you're sure it's over, set a two-week delay before acting. Just the delay, nothing else.

  • You've ended something that was probably survivable
