The Martyr
You'll do it all, then make sure they know.
When things wobble you tighten your hold on them
You'd rather have it out loudly than sit in it
You take the blame early, sometimes before it's offered
Who you are
You take on more than your share, you take it on hot, and you apologize while you're doing it. It's a strange combination — you're controlling and self-blaming at once, which reads as generous right up until the moment it doesn't.
What's real here is the effort. You genuinely do more than the people around you, often without being asked, and it's usually good work. Nobody's inventing your workload.
What's costly is the invoice. Resentment builds quietly and comes out sideways — a sigh, a comment, a fine that isn't fine — and people end up feeling guilty around you without knowing what they did. That's the part that pushes them away.
Say no to one thing this week that you'd normally absorb. Cleanly, with no explanation attached.
You know it's you when…
- You've said it's fine while it was extremely not fine
- You do things nobody asked for and then feel unseen
- Your sigh has communicated more than your last three sentences
