The Sound Effects
You make a noise for things that do not require a noise.
Yours lives in objects, routines and the physical way you do things
Anyone who spends an afternoon with you has already met it
You cannot explain it and you have stopped trying to
Who you are
Sitting down has a sound. Standing up has a different one. Reaching for something on a high shelf produces a small involuntary commentary that nobody asked for. You also talk to objects, animals and occasionally the printer, in a voice that is not your normal voice.
There is no system here and no explanation available. You didn't decide to do this and you can't stop on request, which is exactly why it reads as beige rather than performed. Performed quirkiness is tiring; involuntary noise is just a person existing out loud.
The reason people find this specific thing so affectionate is that it's unguardable. You can curate your opinions, your clothes and your messages. You cannot curate the noise you make putting down a heavy bag. It's the least strategic thing about you, and people read it that way.
The only real cost is the open-plan office, and even there it mostly makes you memorable rather than annoying.
You know it's you when…
- You made a noise sitting down and someone laughed at you
- You had a full conversation with an appliance
- Somebody imitated it and it was unmistakably you
