The Superstition
A private rule, followed exactly, believed by nobody.
Yours is a rule, a theory or a ranking that runs somewhere internal
It surfaces long after people thought they had you figured out
There are reasons, there is an order, and the order does not move
Who you are
You have a small number of rules that you follow precisely and would struggle to justify to anyone, including yourself. The specific route. The thing you touch on the way out. The order of the morning that cannot be rearranged even though nothing happens when it is.
Nobody knows for a long time, because you're not hiding it so much as never mentioning it. It comes up by accident — someone notices you take the long way, or breaks the order, and your reaction is slightly larger than the situation called for.
This one is beige rather than concerning precisely because you know. You're fully aware there's no mechanism, you're not organizing your life around it, and you'd skip it without a crisis if you had to. It's a habit wearing the costume of a rule, and you're in on the joke.
Worth a note: if skipping one genuinely ruins the day, or the list of them keeps growing, that's a different thing than a beige flag and worth mentioning to someone.
You know it's you when…
- Someone broke the order and you reacted bigger than expected
- You take the specific route for no reason you can name
- You know there's no mechanism and do it regardless
