The Tier List
You have ranked things that nobody has ever ranked.
Yours is a rule, a theory or a ranking that runs somewhere internal
Anyone who spends an afternoon with you has already met it
There are reasons, there is an order, and the order does not move
Who you are
Somewhere in your head is a fully populated ranking of a category that does not warrant one. Bridges. Vending machine layouts. The relative dignity of supermarket own-brands. Airport seating. And crucially, the rankings have criteria, and you will produce them on request.
People meet this immediately, because the moment the category comes up in conversation you deliver the hierarchy with total confidence. It's one of the fastest ways someone can become a specific person rather than a pleasant stranger.
It stays beige because the stakes are zero. You're not ranking people, you're not ranking anything with consequences, and you hold the opinions with a lightness that makes them fun rather than exhausting. The whole point is the seriousness applied to something that doesn't deserve it.
The line to watch is only this: a ranking invites disagreement, which is the fun of it. When you start defending one properly, it has stopped being a bit.
You know it's you when…
- You produced a full hierarchy of something trivial
- Someone challenged the ranking and you had criteria
- The category came up and everyone looked at you
