The Backbone Check
They folded in front of people and you saw it happen.
Indecision and passivity are what finish it for you
It hits hardest when other people are watching them
One moment and the feeling is gone, permanently
Who you are
Your ick is watching someone go soft under mild social pressure. A friend pushes, a waiter gets something wrong, someone says something rude — and they shrink, apologise, or laugh along. It's instant and it's total.
You read this as a preview. If they can't hold a position over a wrong order, you don't believe they'll hold one when it costs something, and you'd rather find that out on a Tuesday than two years in. That's not unreasonable.
What you can't see from outside is the difference between weakness and choosing peace. Some people fold because they have no spine; others fold because the fight genuinely isn't worth it to them. Your filter can't currently tell those apart.
Next time, ask afterwards why they let it go. The answer separates the two, and it takes one question.
You know it's you when…
- You watched someone go quiet under mild pressure and felt it end
- You treat small conflicts as a preview of large ones
- A wrong order has genuinely told you everything you needed
