The Overreach
They tried something on you, alone, and it landed wrong.
Trying too obviously is what turns you off fastest
It hits hardest when it's just the two of you
One moment and the feeling is gone, permanently
Who you are
One-on-one, they attempt something — a line, a move, a joke pitched slightly too big for the moment — and it's over immediately. There was no audience. Just you, watching someone reach for a version of themselves that isn't there yet.
What makes this land so hard is intimacy. In a crowd you can look away; alone, you're the entire audience, and there's nowhere for either of you to hide. The gap between who they're performing and who they are is fully lit.
The thing your filter can't see is nerves. People overreach hardest with someone they actually want to impress, which means this ick fires most reliably on people who like you most. That's a genuinely unfortunate design.
Try naming it lightly in the moment instead of filing it. That's cool, you don't have to do a bit with me — it costs nothing and occasionally saves something good.
You know it's you when…
- Someone tried a line on you alone and it ended everything
- You've watched someone perform a version of themselves up close
- It fires hardest on people who were clearly nervous
