The Secondhand Cringe
They tried something in public and you felt it in your body.
Trying too obviously is what turns you off fastest
It hits hardest when other people are watching them
One moment and the feeling is gone, permanently
Who you are
Your ick is performance that doesn't land, witnessed by other people, and it arrives instantly. They attempt a bit, the room doesn't catch it, and something in you closes permanently. You didn't decide it — it just happened.
This is empathy running backwards. You're feeling their exposure on their behalf, and it's so uncomfortable that your brain removes the attraction to make the feeling stop. That's why it's immediate and why it doesn't negotiate.
Worth knowing: this one is harsh. Everyone misjudges a room occasionally, and the people who never do are usually the ones who never try anything. Your filter is fast, accurate about awkwardness, and terrible at distinguishing a bad night from a bad person.
Next time it fires, give it one week before you act on it. See if the feeling survives a second impression.
