Who you are

You get invested quickly and you express it by solving things. Their car, their resume, their landlord situation, their impossible sister. Love, to you, is competence pointed at someone. It's real and it's useful and people feel enormously taken care of by you.

You keep your own footing while you do it, though. You'll solve their week and still go home to your own apartment and your own Sunday. That balance is healthy — it just occasionally reads as clinical, like they're a project you're managing well.

The trouble comes when there's nothing to fix. Ordinary contentment leaves you with your hands empty, and you can get restless, or start finding problems, or drift. You're better at rescue than at Tuesday.

Practice being useless with them on purpose. An afternoon where nothing gets improved and you just sit there is the exact muscle you haven't built.

  • Your instinct in a hard conversation is to open a solution
