Who you are
Up early, ahead of everything, and completely done experimenting. Whatever your age, you are operating with the settledness of someone who worked out what they wanted a long time ago and stopped negotiating with it.
What comes with that is judgment. You see the second and third consequence of things while other people are still reacting to the first, and you are usually right — which is why people bring you decisions rather than news. There is a lot of freedom in not having to reconsider your own basics every year.
The blind spot is that certainty ages badly if it never gets tested. Positions you settled years ago are still running unexamined, and some of them were correct for a version of your life that has since changed.
Once a year, take one settled opinion and argue the other side properly. Most will survive. The one that doesn't is worth the whole exercise.
You know it's you when…
- People bring you decisions instead of news
- You stopped renegotiating your own basics a long time ago
