The Long Preamble
They know everything except where this is going.
You keep it unnamed long past the point where it needed a name
They get the unedited version before they asked for any version
The conversation finds its way home to what you are dealing with
Who you are
You are open, you are present, and you talk about yourself readily. What you never do is move it forward. Months in, they have your whole interior life and no idea whether they are your partner, and asking has started to feel rude.
From the inside this feels like the opposite of a red flag. You are not hiding, you are not cold, you are right there. The closeness is real, which is exactly what makes the missing structure so disorienting for the other person.
The flag is that undefined does not stay neutral. Every week it goes unnamed, the other person is quietly deciding what your silence means, and they usually decide it means they are not quite enough to warrant the sentence.
You do not need a five-year plan. You need one sentence about what you want this to be, said before they have to ask for it.
You know it's you when…
- Four months in, neither of you had used a single word for it
- They asked where this was going and you answered a different question
- You have been very close to people who never knew their status
