The Opening Night
You are incredible for three weeks. Then the run ends.
You escalate early, and the first three weeks look like the third month
They get the unedited version before they asked for any version
Your attention lands off the table, and they can feel it
Who you are
The start is spectacular. You show up completely, you hold nothing back, and for a stretch of weeks the other person has never felt more chosen. Then your attention finds somewhere else to be, and the difference between those two versions is the whole flag.
This is not calculated. The early intensity is real while it lasts. What happens is that the newness was doing more of the work than you realized, and when it wears off there is no habit underneath to take over.
What people experience is not being dumped. It is being slowly unattended — replies getting shorter, plans getting looser — with no conversation marking the change. That ambiguity does more damage than an actual ending would.
The fix is unglamorous. Pick the smallest possible thing you can do in week eight that you were also doing in week one, and keep doing that one thing.
You know it's you when…
- Someone asked what changed and you did not have an answer
- You have been the best three weeks of several people's year
- Your replies got shorter and you never decided to do that
