The Maybe
Nobody can tell if this is happening. Including you.
You keep it unnamed long past the point where it needed a name
They get a clean summary and no way to reach what is under it
Your attention lands off the table, and they can feel it
Who you are
You do not escalate, you do not open up much, and your attention is frequently somewhere else. What that adds up to is a relationship nobody can confirm is running. Plans stay tentative, feelings stay unstated, and the whole thing hovers.
This is rarely strategic. Usually it is a genuine reluctance to close a door before you are certain, combined with a real dislike of the conversation where you would have to say so. Keeping everything open feels kinder than choosing.
The flag is that ambiguity is not neutral for the other person. They cannot make plans, cannot describe you to a friend, and cannot decide whether to keep looking. You are choosing — you are just making them absorb the cost of not saying it.
Pick a side this month, either side. In or out, said plainly, is a better thing to receive than four more weeks of hovering.
You know it's you when…
- A friend asked if you were dating and you had to think about it
- You kept it open for months because closing it felt worse
- Somebody waited on an answer you never planned to give
