The Pitch
They learned your highlight reel and none of your week.
You escalate early, and the first three weeks look like the third month
They get a clean summary and no way to reach what is under it
The conversation finds its way home to what you are dealing with
Who you are
You move quickly and you are compelling doing it, but what you are moving them toward is a presentation. They know your ambitions, your best stories and your funniest failures. They do not know what Tuesday was like.
This usually comes from somewhere reasonable. Being interesting is a skill you built, probably because it worked. It gets you past the first few dates faster than almost anything else, and it keeps working right up until it doesn't.
The flag shows up around week six, when they notice the intimacy has not deepened, only accumulated. They can recite your résumé and cannot name a single thing you are currently struggling with. People eventually read that gap as being managed rather than known.
Try telling them one thing that has no punchline and no lesson attached. It will feel like a worse story. That is the point.
You know it's you when…
- They could list your goals and not one of your ordinary days
- You realized mid-story that you had told it before, polished
- Someone said you are hard to know and you took it as a compliment
