The Tall Tree
You grow straight up and do not really do detours.
Growth. Starting things and pushing upward.
Warmth. Being seen and lighting up a room.
Steadiness. Holding people and plans together.
Edge. Standards, decisions, cutting what's extra.
Depth. Reading the room and finding a way around.
Who you are
Yang Wood — 甲, gap in Korean — is the first of the ten day masters, and saju pictures it as a single tall tree. It grows in one direction: up. That's the whole personality in one image. You pick a direction early, you commit to it, and you are genuinely confused by people who change course every time the wind shifts.
People lean on you because you're easy to build around. You say what you think, you do what you said, and when a group stalls you're usually the one who points somewhere and starts walking. That isn't a need to be in charge so much as an inability to watch a room stand still.
The same trunk that makes you dependable makes you hard to bend. Tall trees don't sway much, and they don't love being pruned. Feedback that asks you to go sideways instead of up tends to land as an insult, even when it's just a good idea.
The thing worth practicing is letting a branch grow somewhere you didn't plan. The strongest version of you still grows straight — it just stops treating every detour as a defeat.
You know it's you when…
- The group stalled and you were already walking before anyone agreed
- Someone suggested a detour and you took it personally for an hour
- You made a plan in January and you're still on it in October
