The Straight Face
Nothing shows. Everything is happening.
It lands the moment it happens, before you've decided anything
Outside you look unbothered while a lot is happening underneath
You come down by moving, doing or saying it out loud to someone
Who you are
It lands immediately and it lands hard, and absolutely none of it makes it to your face. You keep the same voice, you finish the sentence you were in, and people leave the room describing you as unbothered. Later you need to move it out of your body — a run, a long drive, a clean kitchen, a rant to one specific person.
There are rooms where this is the most valuable thing anyone can do. When the news is bad and everybody is watching one person's face, you are the reason it doesn't turn into something worse. A lot of people have felt safer in a hard moment because you looked steady.
But the gap between how it reads and how it feels is wide, and it stays wide unless you say so. People hand you more because you appear to have room. They don't check on you because there's nothing to check on. And you end up running the whole thing off privately, which works right up until the week you don't have time for the run.
Tell one person the plain version while it's happening — not for help, just so the gap between inside and outside isn't yours alone to hold.
You know it's you when…
- A room stayed calm because your face did
- People kept handing you more because you looked fine
- It came out on a long run instead of in the conversation
