There's an edge to them too — a history, an unusual life, something not fully resolved. You're not after danger exactly. You're after depth, and depth tends to come with a complicated backstory.
And they take care of you, but privately: the thing they noticed and remembered, the small deliberate act, nothing performed for an audience. You'd take one of those over a hundred public gestures.
The risk is confusing withholding with depth. Someone who reveals slowly is fascinating; someone who reveals nothing is just unavailable, and the two are very hard to tell apart early on.
