The Teammate
Fun, dependable, and not about to carry you.
You want the person the room notices first
Reliable beats exciting and you've stopped apologizing
You want a teammate, not a caretaker
Who you are
You want someone with real energy who also has their own life fully handled. They're the person who's genuinely fun at a party and also has a savings account, a dentist, and plans for August. Competence is attractive to you in a way you might not say out loud.
Crucially, you don't want to be taken care of. You want to be met. Splitting things, arguing well, holding your own — that's the texture you're after, and being coddled makes you itchy within about a week.
The risk is that you and this person can end up running parallel excellent lives without ever actually leaning on each other. Two capable people can go a very long time without either one admitting they need anything.
Somebody has to be the first one to need something out loud. In this pairing, that person is usually you, and it's the whole difference between a great partnership and two roommates who are dating.
You know it's you when…
- You find competence more attractive than intensity
- Being taken care of makes you weirdly uncomfortable
- Your ideal fight is one where both of you make good points
